This was a workshop conducted by Wekie Tay, Distinguished Toastmaster. He is a mind mastery practitioner and has been a Toastmaster for 11 years. Throughout this workshop, he shared with us how powerful our mind is and how to use our mind effectively.
Here is the summary of the workshop:
There are 4 levels of learning:
1) Unconscious incompetence
=> You don’t know what you don’t know. (eg. I don’t know what I need to know for a particular new subject.)
2) Conscious incompetence
=> You know what you don’t know. (eg. I know that I don’t know French language.)
3) Conscious competence
=> You know how to do things. (eg. To answer questions during an exam.)
4) Unconscious competence
=> You can do things without thinking of doing it. (eg. Now, I’m typing and I don’t actually think of typing.)
Your mind is like a muscle.
You need to go workout to keep your body muscle tight and fit. This is exactly the same to your mind.
1) Your mind needs nutrition.
=> You have to maintain healthy lifestyle and have enough sleep. If you have enough sleep, you will feel energized.
2) Your mind needs to be used often.
=> You have to practise your mind often. (eg. Solving quiz, solving mathematical problems, doing left & right hands exercise…)
3) Your mind and your body are interconnected.
=> Your mind and body affect each other.
4) Your mind takes direct messages.
=> Your mind can’t process negative statement.
5) Your mind cannot differentiate between fact and fiction.
=> Whatever you read, your mind will read as it is.
6) Your mind thinks faster than you think.
=> Whatever action that you are taking, it’s first processed in your mind and then transformed into your action.
7) Your mind sets your action, forms your habits then shapes your character.
=> You can create our life if you can master your mind.
Mind Mastery Modeling
Your life is full of modeling. You modeled the way your parents talk, your parents walk and even your parent’s behaviour. My dad always told me that swimming is a very dangerous sport. Whenever I jumped into water, I would have fear. Now, I still don’t know how to swim. To speak effectively and you have to find a credible speaker who you wish to be like him one day.
1) What beliefs do you have as a speaker?
2) Choose a role model.
3) What attributes does he have?
4) Why do you choose him?
5) How can you speak like him?
6) What activities you have to do in order to improve yourself?
Visualization technique
Always rehearse your speech in your mind and imagine yourself in a highly motivated and energized stage. It’s great to imagine an incident that happened to you before that made you felt really proud of. Recall back that incident and reply in your mind before you give a speech. The more vivid you imagine the more powerful the effect.
