Yow Kia
Wow, wow, wow… I really have to admit that she has really done a great job by injecting her humour throughout the whole speech! Well done Sammy Su! There are more than 35 laughter points! What a scintillating performance!
I don’t know her… It just happened that I was browsing My YouTube videos and this video was highlighted at the side bar. This video must be something special, I thought. Ok, why don’t I click on it and see how other district champion is like. By the way, the presenter is called Sammy Su, from District 67 (Taiwan). One thing that I feel amazed is Taiwanese’s English accent is FANSTASTIC! You need a proof? Go to youtube.com and search for district 67 speech and you will get what I mean.
Here comes to the analysis of her speech:
The speech title is “My Mum and My Datesâ€. Boy & girl relationship kind of topic is always popular in humorous speech contest. It can easily pique audience’s interest, we as audience can immediately immerse ourselves into her world.
By the way, do you know what kind of humour works the best? IT’S HUMILIATION! Human is so cruel, isn’t he? We love to laugh at people’s humiliation. Sammy Su did it very well by humiliating herself throughout the speech. She is over 35 years old and STILL single and available. One of the reasons is because she is a TALL lady. She slowly teased the audience by talking about the scenes she had blind dates arranged by her mum – her so-called professional matchmaker who had matched more than 100 couples in the past 10 years.
Also, I must applaud on her good use of dramatization technique. We love to watch drama rather than a PURELY talk show, don’t we? She dramatized the dialogue between she and her mum by using very appropriate body language and vocal variety. Was her body language too exaggerated? It’s just nice, I would say.
You may notice that even though there are more than 35 laughter points, I feel that she can actually add in more laughter points. She can easily make an over-50 laughter points speech. She has the ability to do it, don’t you agree? As you can see from the clip, most of the laughter points were drawn from the dialogue session and her body movements. If she could cut away the fact and information telling session, like the part she was telling a survey done by the China Times, the percentage of under-35-year-old single Taiwanese. I think this part can actually be replaced by “the reasons why staying single is goodâ€. One more thing I think she could take note in order to have a more PERFECT speech. I was trying to catch her words while she was talking as her mum’s role. The pitch was too high and it was quite unclear. Perhaps, the voice was clearer in the auditorium. I don’t know… She may want to consider lower the pitch of her voice during her mum-talk.
Here are some of the laughter points that I love:
1) Showing her fingers without a ring and brought out that she is single and available.
2) Asking question – who is still single? And let us know that where she should focus her eye contact.
3) Her mum said, don’t put her eyes on her head, she is tall enough.
4) Her mum is a professional match maker who had matched 100 couples in the past 10 years.
5) Her mum carried her photos to the morning market.
6) She became very famous in every market.
7) Her mum advised her not to stand up during blind date, because her height might scare the guy away.
8 ) Her mum rapped about her good points in front of the guy.
9) One guy looks like Tom Cruise, whose wives are all taller than him.
10) She asked a waiter to keep on refilling her mum’s glass so that she could stand a chance to talk to the guy while her mum was going to toilet.
