Girls and Boys, Women and Men, Ladies and Gentlemen…

Let me present to you my humorous speech – “Money, money, money!”, which I presented during District 80 Division Z Humorous Speech Contest on 27th October 2007. I was placed 3rd in the contest.

I am glad to announce that this speech has created more than 50 laughter points within 7 minutes. There were 5 contestants and I was lucky to be the 4th speaker. I was paying full attention to the first two speakers and tried to draw some material from their speech to add some more laughter to my speech. I have learnt that this is quite a powerful technique – to call back the incident happened during the contest and create humour to your speech. I used this technique during my Area contest and it worked pretty well! During the Division Z contest, fortunately, I managed to STEAL some material from the first two speakers and tried to summarize the thought while the 3rd speaker was presenting. That’s the reason why I didn’t draw material from the 3rd speaker. My mind was rehearsing during that time…

A big thank to the first speaker – Vivian. Her topic was about superstitious. This topic was just nice blend into one of my stories – A fortune teller told me that I will be rich one day. After telling my story, I added a sentence, “Vivian, I’m a superstitious guy, by the way…”. Everybody LAUGHED!!!!

Another big thank to the second speaker – Wee Meng. His topic was about Singlish. There was one part he explained about the usage of “Lah” in Singlish. He was saying that “Lah” is not a pause filler in Singlish, it is used at the end of sentences for emphasis. In my conclusion, I was supposed to call the audience for action by saying “Work harder, and earn the money yourself.” Eventually, I changed to “Work harder-LAH (they LAUGHED!), Earn the money yourself-LAH (they LAUGHED AGAIN!)”

After all, it’s a great experience for me to compete against all the great speakers in Division Z!

p/s: Want to know about what I have learnt during the humorous speech from Club Contest to Division Contest? Stay Tune! I will update you all soon…
