This workshop was held after the workshop “the power of subconscious mind” on the same day, same venue. Again, it’s conducted by Dr Arulnathan, DTM.
He used the same strategy to first grab the audience’s attention by showing his masterly memory technique to remember the day of a particular date from year 1900 to year 2050. He answered the days perfectly from the dates given by the audience. It sounds unbelievable, it sounds fanciful and yet, he did it! Was it his insanity? You may think… why would people bother to remember the days of the dates for so many years? Sometimes, we don’t even remember the birthdays of our friends and family members.
Of course, there must be a reason behind the demonstration. The purpose was to show us, using proper memory techniques, you can remember almost everything in your life.
During the workshop, he showed us the techniques to remember.
1) A list of items
2) Names
3) Dates
4) Numbers
One of the most powerful techniques was ASSOCIATION. So long as you can associate one item to another wildly, imaginatively, fancifully, you will tend to remember the items perfectly.
Here is one of the examples he showed us, how to remember a list of 20 items effortlessly.
1) telephone 2) banana 3) book 4) table 5) car 6) pen 7) key 8 ) elevator 9) moon 10) spectacles 11) newspaper 12) papaya 13) football 14) cooking oil 15) bread 16) shoes 17) shaver 18) tie 19) suitcase 20) pencils
Wow, I can’t believe that I still remember all the 20 items now, without referring to the notes. AMAZING!!
Now, you may ask, how to do that? Here are the secrets… Try your best to associate one item to another with an incident. In a nutshell, the incident must be funny and unusual. Why? For example, when you were jogging, you saw a naked old lady was selling newspaper. Do you think you will easily forget that incident?
How to remember a list of items:
1) telephone -> banana
- Imagine the telephone holder as a banana.
2) banana -> book
- The banana is reading a book relaxingly .
3) book -> table
- A lot of books are used to assemble as a table.
4) table -> car
- A lot of tables are used to form a road for car to drive along.
5) car -> pen
- While you are driving, there are a lot of pens on the floor and the pens are dispersing when you drive through them.
6) pen -> key
- Instead of using a key to open a door, you use a pen.
7) key -> elevator
- A key with hands and legs is running on an elevator.
8 ) elevator -> moon
- The elevator is so high that it reaches the moon.
9) moon -> spectacles
- The moon is wearing a pair of spectacles.
10) spectacles -> newspaper
- The moon is wearing a pair of spectacles to read newspaper.
11) newspaper -> papaya
- The newspaper is totally blank. Only papaya images are shown in the newspaper.
12) papaya -> football
- A group of youngsters are kicking papaya instead of football.
13) football -> cooking oil
- The appearance of the cooking oil container is a football.
14) cooking oil -> bread
- You are submerging the breads into a big wok which is filled with cooking oil.
15) bread -> shoes
- You cut a center hole on a big loaf of bread and wear it as a shoe.
16) shoes -> shaver
- You use a shaver to shave away the dirt on the shoes edges.
17) shaver -> tie
- A shaver is wearing a tie.
18) tie -> suitcase
- Ties are used to tie up suitcase.
19) suitcase -> pencils
- When you open the suitcase, a lot of pencils were dropping from the suitcase.
How to remember names:
Look at a special feature on a person’s appearance. For example, a guy with long chin, his name is Kenneth.
- Break the name Kenneth into “Can” “Earth”
- His long chin is so long that it can reach the earth.
How to remember dates and numbers:
This one is a bit more complicated. First of all, you have to memorize a table of codes from 0 - 9. Each of the number represents a certain group of alphabet.
0 - s, z, soft-c - remember as ‘z is first letter of zero’
1 - d, t, th - remember as letters with 1 downstroke
2 - n - remember as having 2 downstrokes
3 - m - has three downstrokes
4 - r - imagine a 4 and an R glued together back-to-back
5 - L - imagine the 5 propped up against a book end (L)
6 - j, sh, soft-ch, dg, soft-g - g is 6 rotated 180 degrees.
7 - k, hard-ch, hard-c, hard-g, ng - imagine K as two 7s
rotated and glued together
8 - f, v - imagine the bottom loop of the 8 as an eFfluent
pipe discharging waste (letter image of F in
alphabet system)
9 - p, b - b as 9 rotated 180 degrees
** vowels are not used to represent the number.
For example,
23 -> n, m -> Name
98 -> b, f -> Beef
400 -> r, c, s -> races
0824261490 -> s, v, n, r, n, g, t, r, p, s -> seven orange traps
The idea of this technique is to convert the numbers into an image and you can use association for make connection to the words.
